Choosing the Right Industrial Metal Cutting Saw: A Buyers Guide

Date: 24-01-2024

When it comes to precision metal cutting in the industrial sector, it's essential to understand the characteristics and applications of different types of industrial metal cutting saws. It will save you money, time and a whole lot of hassle.

Here’s our rundown on popular metal cutting saw options—bandsaws, coldsaws, friction saws and T.C.T. saws.

Bandsaws

Well suited to high-capacity metal cutting jobs, bandsaws can cut through large volumes of work quickly and easily.

With a continuous band of toothed metal that rotates on wheels, these saws are capable of cutting very large material sizes and all metal types. Due to their large capacity, bandsaws can cut pack material as well, where multiple pieces are packed together and cut at once.

Bandsaws are ideal for:

  • Versatility
  • Cutting large workpieces
  • Pack / Stack cutting material

Made in Italy, MACC bandsaws are heavy-duty, innovative and reliable machines. The trusted range includes 7”, 9” 10” and 11” medium-sized saws that are perfect for steel fabricators.

Larger capacity, industrial machines up to 18”, manual machines, semi-automatic as well as full automatic CNC bandsaws are also available in the range.

Coldsaws

If your application requires fast, accurate and smooth cuts with minimal burr production, a coldsaw might be the solution.

Coldsaws use a circular blade with teeth to make efficient cuts in metal. Both the blade and material being cut remain cool when a coldsaw is used.

They are well suited to cutting most ferrous and non-ferrous alloys and the blades can be sharpened multiple times when they become blunt—making them highly durable and long-wearing machines.

Coldsaws are the most suited machine for cutting round tube and bar in large quantities. Round material is very difficult to pack cut. The time setting up the pack, the specialty vices and machine required and the high failure rate outweighs the benefit. This is where a very fast automatic coldsaw is most suited and will work through large volumes of material faster than pack / stack cutting.

Coldsaws are ideal for:

  • Cutting fine metal
  • Straight and angled cuts
  • Mass production with minimal material waste
  • Clean, burr-free cuts
  • Cutting large volumes of round material like tubes, pipes and bar stock

Looking to buy high-quality coldsaws at a competitive price? MACC coldsaws are available in manual, semi-automatic and vertical semi-automatic variants with round cutting capacities from 70mm to 100mm.

These high-quality Italian coldsaws are designed for the most demanding industrial workplaces and deliver precisely accurate results. Every coldsaw we sell comes complete with a blade and optional stands.

Friction saws

When it comes to cutting through extremely tough high alloy materials, friction saws excel.

Friction saws are circular saws that use high-speed rotation and frictional heat to melt through challenging materials, producing a very fast cut. The negative effect of the melting process results in a rough cut, which will then require grinding afterwards.

Friction saws are ideal for:

  • Cutting the most difficult materials
  • High-production cutting applications
  • Simple straight-line sawing or stock cut off

MACC friction saws are industrial grade and suited for a large range of metal cutting jobs. We have two highly reliable friction saws available to purchase.

The TV 350 is extra heavy-duty, featuring a swivel head and swivel vice that provides complete reverse-angle cutting.

The TV 400 has all the same features as the 350 model but with greater cutting capacity and a larger blade.

T.C.T. aluminium saws

If you're looking for durability and longevity in your cutting tool, consider a tungsten carbide-tipped (T.C.T.) saw.

These circular saws use tungsten carbide-tipped blades that provide superior strength, high resistance to wear and allow the saw to be operated at much higher temperatures to produce a faster cut.

These saws are specifically suitable for a range of non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, copper and brass.

T.C.T. saws are ideal for:

  • Cutting hard and abrasive non-ferrous metals
  • Longer blade life
  • Continuous and heavy-duty cutting tasks
  • Value for money

While T.C.T. blades hold a very long wear life, they are less resistant to shock. MACC have manufactured T.C.T. saws that deliver reduced vibration during the cutting process to mitigate this.

We have two extra heavy-duty T.C.T. saws in our range. The TA 400 features a swivel head, mitring head, twin manual sliding vices, fully recirculating coolant system and an easy-to-use trigger switch operation.

We also have the TA 400 Pneumatic model featuring additional benefits including two pneumatic spring return vices.
